CVJV Habitat Fun Packs

In an effort to make learning about nature both fun and interesting, the Central Valley Joint Venture has put together curriculum related to waterfowl and wetlands. Offering lessons involving art, science, math, language arts and music, the curriculum is organized into three levels: kindergarten through third grade, fourth grade through sixth grade, and junior/senior high school.

The kits are complete, and only need to be printed out. Here are a few downloading and printing suggestions:

  • All files are in PDF format and are zipped with winzip. Both Acrobat Reader and Winzip are available free.
  • Use a high print resolution. The files are 100 dpi, in order to save space, and look better printed at a higher resolution.
  • Some pages are in color but look fine when printed on a black and white printer.
  • Colored paper can be used for the entire file or certain pages (I.D. Cards, maps, etc.) Notes are available in the PDF indicating when pages were printed on colored paper in the original Fun Packs.
  • Macintosh format is currently not supported. It will be available soon.

Federal Jr Duck Stamp Program

The Junior Duck Stamp is a nationwide program to teach the importance of conserving our wetlands and migratory birds. It pairs science, the arts, and other core subjects to creatively teach greater awareness of our natural resources.

Teachers can choose from a variety of lessons to get across concepts of ecology, conservation, and civic action. At the same time, challenge students with assignments for writing, oral presentations, data collection, graphing, mapping, and much more.

As part of the program, students are invited to participate in an annual art competition. In California, winning artwork is used to create an annual calendar. Creating an entry is a valuable experience. It helps students tie together lessons on animal form and function, plant science, observation, wetland habitats, and more. In the visual arts, students practice sketching, drawing, painting, and composition.

The U.S. Department of Interior and the Federal Duck Stamp Office head up this program, and in California it is coordinated by the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge.
