Welcome to the New Year

February 04, 2013

Dear CVJV Partners and Friends,

Welcome to the New Year! 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the Central Valley Joint Venture. The CVJV has a remarkable record of accomplishments in its long history and we will be recognizing and celebrating those accomplishments throughout the year. This e-newsletter will be one of several forums we will use to share news, stories, anecdotes and other information. Look for it monthly and forward it to others.

Thanks to the efforts of CVJV partners, the Central Valley landscape has changed dramatically during the past 25 years. Wetland protection and restoration accomplishments, combined with the proliferation of winter-flooded rice, have resulted in a more welcoming environment for wetland birds.  In spite of our successes, a range of factors continue to diminish habitats essential for healthy bird populations. That is why the Central Valley Joint Venture partnership remains so essential. For 25 years we’ve worked collaboratively, creatively, and with determination to insure that all birds, and the habitats they need to flourish, have a voice. From the beginning, we have shared a vision of a landscape where migratory and breeding birds thrive. That vision has inspired us to bring together diverse and committed partners to protect, restore and enhance bird habitats in the Central Valley.

When the Central Valley Habitat Joint Venture formed, voluntary partnerships comprised of diverse stakeholders were unknown. Sportsmen and environmental groups looked upon one another with suspicion. Today, hunters, conservationists, farmers, private landowners, birders, corporations and academics work together in common cause to conserve a unique and irreplaceable part of our California heritage. That is the legacy of the Central Valley Joint Venture.

We look forward to sharing our history, our goals and some of the CVJV’s singular voices in the months ahead. Stay tuned.

Best regards,

Ellie Cohen
