New StoryMap Explores Habitat Restoration and Flood Protection in the Yolo Bypass

The California Department of Water Resources and partners have released a new interactive StoryMap highlighting habitat restoration and flood protection projects in the Yolo Bypass–Cache Slough region. The StoryMap walks readers through several projects that are designed to restore wetlands, improve fish passage, and reduce flood risk.

For bird conservation, these projects are encouraging news. Several of the restoration efforts profiled in the StoryMap should directly benefit wetland-dependent bird species by expanding or improving the habitats that shorebirds, waterfowl, and wading birds rely on during migration and overwintering. The Upper Elkhorn Expansion, in particular, could also benefit breeding riparian birds by restoring streamside habitat.

Multi-benefit projects like the ones shown in this StoryMap reflect the kind of integrated, partnership-driven approach that the CVJV supports across the Central Valley. Explore here to learn more about what’s underway in this critical region.
